CARIOQA-PHB partners meet at Thales Alenia Space to advance on instrument preliminary design

On 9–10 June, around thirty representatives from the CARIOQA-PHB project consortium gathered at the Thales Alenia Space site in Cannes, France, to progress several topics linked to the project.

Industrial partners including Thales Alenia Space, EXAIL, LEONARDO and ZARM, together with scientific partners (LTE, LUH and LP2N) and space agencies CNES and DLR, took part in three dedicated round-table discussions focused on the key milestones required for the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) increase of the Preliminary Design Definition of the Instrument, for which Thales Alenia Space is responsible.

These discussions enabled the consortium to review ongoing developments, align technical priorities and strengthen collaboration between all project partners as the programme moves towards its next major phases.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for participants to visit the Thales Alenia Space industrial site in Cannes. Partners were given privileged access to the clean room facilities where satellites are assembled and integrated, offering valuable insight into the industrial expertise and infrastructure supporting the programme.

This two-day workshop highlighted the strong commitment of all CARIOQA-PHB partners to successfully advancing the project and preparing the next stages of instrument development.

Behind the scenes of CARIOQA-PHB with Thales Alenia Space

As part of the CARIOQA-PHB project, G.A.C. Group, the partner responsible for the project’s communication activities, recently visited the facilities of Thales Alenia Space in Cannes, one of the project’s key industrial partners.

This visit provided an opportunity to produce a dedicated video presenting the CARIOQA-PHB project, its main objectives and challenges, as well as the strategic role played by Thales Alenia Space in the industrial development of the technologies associated with the CARIOQA mission.

The video also offers valuable insight into the collaboration between research and industry in support of innovation in the space sector and the advancement of future in-orbit technologies.

CARIOQA-PHB advances key subsystems through industrial collaboration

In February, CARIOQA-PHB industrial partners met in Gradignan and Niviano to advance the Microwave and Laser subsystems—two critical elements of the instrument. With several technologies still at low Technology Readiness Levels (TRL), the consortium aims to reach TRL 6 by the end of Phase B.

The meetings enabled partners to refine technical requirements, address constraints, and strengthen coordination through face-to-face co-engineering sessions at Leonardo and Exail facilities. These exchanges proved essential for improving efficiency and aligning subsystem development with overall mission goals.

GAC Group visits Thales Alenia Space to highlight CARIOQA-PHB

Last Thursday, the team responsible for the communication and dissemination activities of the CARIOQA-PHB project visited Thales Alenia Space, responsible for the project’s industrial activities.

During the visit to Thales Alenia Space’s facilities in Cannes, France, interviews were filmed with Thierry Jeannet, Program Manager for CARIOQA , and Yvan Baillion, Director of Programmes Portfolio & Future Business. The interviews aim to present the Phase B of the CARIOQA mission and provide further insight into the next stages of its development.

The visit also gave the GAC team the opportunity to discover the Thales Alenia Space site and tour the clean room facilities, where satellites are assembled. It is in this highly specialised environment that the CARIOQA satellite is expected to be built.
